Vigo's economy is significant to the total GDP of Galicia
Vigo is the most important city and leading industrial area in Galicia. The city has automotive plants, shipyards and auxiliary industry. PSA Peugeot Citroen (PSA) a French automobile and motorcycle manufacturer company has their main headquarters in Vigo. In 2003 company produced a total of 473,000 vehicles, out of which, most of the vehicles were sold outside Spain.
Port of Vigo is the largest fishing port in Europe and one of the busiest in transportation. It is also home to the world's largest fishing company, Pescanova. It is the base for the big fishing companies, which have prominent presence in countries such Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique, Australia, Argentina, the Falkland Islands, Chile and Peru, among others. Fish is exported to countries like Portugal, Italy, France and other more distant markets including Asia.
Now a day’s tourism is becoming one of the most booming industries in Vigo. Every year millions of visitors pay a visit to Vigo, boosting its tourism industry.
Vigo is not only the most populated city in Galicia, but also provides the majority of Galicia's total GDP, making it the most important city in the north-western region of Spain.
